On Sunday night, a great TV-movie came on about a high school special education class that had aspirations of attending Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Up until that point in Space Camp history, no special education class had been permitted to attend camp as the camp did not have the accommodations to deal with a mixed population of students. Through the hard work and efforts of a persistent teacher, this class overcame the odds, raised the funds, and found their way in Huntsville competing with various other teams of “normal” kids to earn the most points to finish the camp. This story was inspiring on so many levels. From the beginning, I connected to the movie because I had the opportunity to attend Space Camp for a week one summer with my best friend. It was one of the best weeks of my life as a youth. From a professional standpoint, I connected with this movie as a fellow teacher who also likes to push the envelope to maximize the potential I see in each of my students. For those students who are willing to work, I will work with them, side-by-side to help them reach and exceed their goals. From a personal level, I connected to this movie as a mother of a special needs child. Although my daughter is only five, I felt almost propelled to what her life may be like in ten more years. I celebrated with the victories of the class, and I cried with the ridicule, disappointment, and frustration these students faced each day while at school. It was one of the best TV movies I have seen in quite some time.
